From site sign-off to opening day, give every handoff an owner and every milestone a clear finish line.

Start with the opening date

A store-opening checklist is useful when it shows the work between today and opening day. Start with the target date, then work backwards through fit-out, equipment, hiring, training and operational readiness. Separate fixed commitments from assumptions that still need confirmation.

Make ownership explicit

Give each milestone one accountable owner. Contributors may come from construction, operations, finance or an external partner, but someone needs to confirm when the work is ready to move forward. Record the next action alongside the owner so a status update leads to a decision.

Define the handoff

“Construction complete” can mean different things to different teams. Set a clear acceptance condition: the inspection is approved, the snag list is agreed, or the handover document is signed. Attach the evidence where the next team can find it.

Review exceptions, not every line

Keep the full checklist available, but use your weekly review for blocked work, approaching deadlines and changes to the opening date. Ask what changed, what it affects and who will resolve it. A short exception list helps the team spend its meeting time on decisions.
